The British Way

Updated: Oct 12, 2021

Episode 12 of the fourth series is, like many episodes of this series, lost to history. It is preserved only in this Radio Times listing for 18 December 1953, and in its title, ‘The British Way’.

Upon conducting a Google search for ‘The British Way’, I found several articles and reports about war and empire, which, while accurate, is also depressing. But then I saw this, and I was filled with patriotic pride.

I’m off to put the kettle on.

Sellers (American): Now Mr Prime Minister, first question, What is the liquid that most inspires the British Soldier while on active duty? Seagoon: Tea! Sellers: Tea is correct, a big hand for the lucky winner! [FX: Clapping and cheering] Sellers: Now, d'you wanna double your salary? . . Good - Question number two; What is the organisation that supplies tea to the troops? Seagoon: The NAAFI! Sellers: Right again! [FX: Clapping and cheering] Sellers: Now, I'll just pour this bucket of custard over your head to prove that Prime Ministers are funny!

(from ‘The Jet-Propelled Guided NAAFI’, Series 6 Episode 19, broadcast 24 January 1956)
