Don't Spare The Horses

Updated: Oct 13, 2021

Episode 15 of the third series was broadcast on 17 February 1953, and was titled ‘The Story of Civilisation’. It aired at 9:30pm on the Home Service, as per page 24 of the Radio Times.

One of the first TV shows to feature all three Goons (well, three of four – sorry Michael Bentine!) was Don’t Spare The Horses. Screened in 1952, it had three episodes according to IMDB.

Episode one featured Harry Secombe, episode two featured Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers, and Secombe returned for the third and final episode, alongside one-time Goon Show guest Carole Carr (among others).

In the early 1950s, most television shows were broadcast live and not recorded, meaning there is no record of these shows. There is so little information out there that it’s not even certain who wrote the shows.
